Humboldt State University
Harry S. Kieval Mathematics Scholarship
for Transferring Students
To recognize outstanding performance by students in lower division mathematics
at a two year college in preparation to transfer as a mathematics major,
the Humboldt State University Mathematics Department has established an
annual scholarship of $300 per student specifically for one or two
students transferring to Humboldt State University with the intention
to major in mathematics. The scholarship is made from an endowment
to the University by the late Professor Emeritus Harry S. Kieval. The award(s)
of the scholarship will be made by May 15, 2000, for Fall, 2000.
The scholarship award(s) will be made to students for outstanding performance
in college level courses at a two year college in preparation for a mathematics
major. When possible, this preparation should include calculus (3 semesters/4
quarters), linear algebra, and differential equations.
Students who have completed applications to HSU and indicated an
interest in majoring in mathematics as of February 15, 2000, will be sent
application forms soliciting
a list of grades from courses,
courses currently being taken, and
1 or 2 letters of recommendation from mathematics instructors commenting
directly on what they believe distinguishes the student as a potential
mathematics major.
Completed applications must be received by April 17, 2000.
