• Catalog Description: Matrices, vector spaces, linear transformations, canonical forms, characteristic values, applications. Prereq: MATH 240 and 241.

Theory and Problems of Linear Algebra by S. Lipschutz, 3rd edition Schaum's Outlines, McGraw-Hill.
• SCOPE: This course will cover various topics from " linear algebra." We will examine informally and formally theorems and theories for linear algebraic structures.  Supplementary readings and materials will be supplied as appropriate, as well as edited class notes on line.
• TESTS AND ASSIGNMENTS:

Homework assignments are made regularly and should be passed in on the due date. Sloppy and disorganized work will not be accepted.
Homework will not be accepted after 5 pm on the due date.
There will be one self-scheduled mid-term exam, a special "partnership" assignment, and a comprehensive final examination.
• The Mid-term Exam will be announced at least one week in advance.
• THE FINAL EXAMINATION WILL BE SELF SCHEDULED.
• The final exam will be comprehensive, covering the entire semester.
• BECAUSE OF THE INTENSE NATURE OF THIS COURSE, MAKE-UP TESTS WILL NOT BE GIVEN EXCEPT FOR VERY SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES!
• It is the student's responsibility to request a makeup promptly.

• Partnership Activities: # Partnerships of 2 or 3 members will work on some activites jointly. Every two weeks your partnership will submit a summary of what we have covered in class. (No more than two sides of a paper.) These may be organized in any way you find useful but should not be a copy of your class notes. I will read and correct these before returning them. Partners will receive corrected photocopies.

Your summaries will be allowed as references for part of the final examination only.
• GRADES:  Final grades will be determined taking into consideration the quality of work done in the course as evidenced primarily from the accumulation of points from the various assignments.
• The Midterm exam will be worth 100 points, the partnership assignment will be worth 50 points, and the final exam will be worth 200 points.
• The work on the bi-weekly summaries will be used to determine 50 points .
• Homework performance will count for 100 points.

• The total points available for the semester is 500. Notice that only 300 of these points are from tests, so regular participation is essential to forming a good foundation for your grades as well as your learning.

MORE THAN 4 ABSENCES MAY LOWER THE FINAL GRADE FOR POOR ATTENDANCE.

• TECHNOLOGY: The computer or graphing calculator will be used for some problems.  I will be able to loan to any student in the class an HP48G calculator. Students wishing help with any graphing calculator should plan to bring their calculator manual with them to class. Computer software would also be useful.
• Here are some on-line tools:
• Linear solver, solves your linear systems, including systems with parameters.
• Matrix calculator, computes determinant, inverse, eigenvectors,...
• Matrix multiplier, input two matrices and get their product (or other formula).
• Vector calculator, linear dependence, orthogonal complement, visualisation, products...
